The colonial war in Africa, that began in the sixties, was one of the principal factors
in the final collapse of the Portuguese dictatorship.
The young army captains responsible for the Carnation Revolution had realised
that the conflict could not be resolved by the military. They knew that the solution
would have to be political. However, the regime insisted on keeping soldiers in the
African territories.
When Salazar had an accident and Marcello Caetano took his place, people thought
there would be a gradual transition to democracy.
Nevertheless, the new prime minister concluded that, unless his government was
strong, Portugal might end up losing the colonies.
