2025 OCR A Level Classical Greek Paper 1 and Mark Scheme Combined (H444/01 Unseen Translation)
Classical Greek prose translation (unseen) → translating a never‑seen prose passage into English.
Classical Greek verse translation (unseen) → translating a never‑seen verse passage (iambic trimeter, in 2025/26 the verse author = Sophocles).
Scansion / metrics for verse: ability to scan two lines of verse (i.e. metre‑scanning) as part of verse translation.
Knowledge of accidence and syntax (morphology & grammar) for Classical Greek, as listed in the specification’s Appendix 5d — that is, morphological forms, syntax patterns, verb forms, noun cases, participles, subordinate clauses, etc.
Familiarity with vocabulary and linguistic structures drawn from wider reading — no fixed “defined vocabulary list” for the unseen component, so broader reading is expected.
Comprehension of meaning on a sentence/phrase level — understanding individual Greek words, phrases, sentence-level syntax in both prose and verse contexts.
Clear, accurate translation into English: ability to render meaning clearly, concisely, logically in fluent English, using appropriate terminology.
Flexibility and responsiveness: ability to deal with previously unseen Greek, including unfamiliar vocabulary or constructions, and produce a correct translation. (Because there is no fixed vocab list for unseen.)
