2025 OCR A Level Classical Greek Paper 3 and Mark Scheme Combined (H444/03 Prose Literature)

  • In H444/03, students study two prose set‑texts in Classical Greek: one from “Group 1” and one from “Group 2” (as defined by the syllabus).

  • In addition to those set texts, students are expected to have read additional relevant ancient literature in English translation, to help them understand the broader historical / cultural / literary context in which the set texts were produced.

The skills expected of students include:

    • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the set texts.

    • Understanding of their literary context — e.g. genre, purpose, audience, historical background.

    • Awareness of broader social, cultural, historical context, where relevant, to interpret a text appropriately.

    • Ability to identify, analyse and evaluate literary techniques: style, characterisation, argument (where relevant), meaning, structure.

    • Use of appropriate technical literary terms in English when describing features (e.g. rhetorical devices, discourse techniques, narrative strategies) rather than writing in Greek.

    • For exam responses, to select relevant material from their study (in Greek and in translation) to support analysis and evaluation; and to write at length, clearly and coherently.
